Heather Chaplin is an associate professor in journalism and founding director of the Journalism + Design program at The New School. Since she founded it in 2014, Journalism + Design has become one of the most popular majors at the school. Today, Chaplin directs the grant-funded work associated with the program, including design and systems- thinking workshops for newsrooms, public events and convenings, partnerships with community colleges, and an open-sourced curriculum for journalism professors.

Chaplin is the recipient of multiple journalism innovation grants and the author of several academic papers on the role of design in journalism and how to cover complex topics in the news. She speaks regularly on the future of journalism and digital culture at places like SXSW, MIT, Columbia University, the Online News Association conference, The Society of News Designers and The News Impact Summit.
